There is no doubt that the Lake District is one of the most beautiful places in the UK, and with so much to see it is often hard to decide what to do first. However, at Whitbarrow Hotel our first port of call is always Ullswater (just 10 minutes away from the hotel) and there is no better way to take in the breathtaking views of one of our most famous lakes than with a trip on the Ullswater Steamers.
The Ullswater Steamers have been delighting tourists and locals alike since 1855 and is certainly a fabulous way to see the beautiful lake that inspired Wordsworth to write one of his most famous poems ‘I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud’. We would argue that no trip to the Lake District is complete without enjoying this awe-inspiring lake cruise!
You can start the cruise from any of four docks around the lake but we love the route from Pooley Bridge.
The lake cruise starts off at the docking port in Pooley Bridge and runs through to Howtown, passing the stone circle along the way! Then it travels to Patterdale and shortly on to Glenridding. From here the steamer takes you around the side of the lake to Aira Force, a beautiful waterfall on the banks of Ullswater. The cruise then heads back to Pooley Bridge, passing by Maiden Castle en route.
Of course you can choose to remain on the steamer for the full cruise but we highly recommend hopping on and off at each of the docks so that you can explore the wonderful lakeside villages and walk up Aira Force to make this a truly memorable day out. Ullswater is just a 10 minute drive from Whitbarrow Hotel so this is a wonderful way to experience the very best of the Lake District with ease.
We have some wonderful Special Offers designed to showcase all our favourite things about the Lake District so don’t miss out on a fabulous trip to Whitbarrow Hotel.
See you soon!
