Autumn is the best time for walking in the Lakes. Thanks to the milder (and occasionally drier) weather you will have plenty of choice on which routes to tackle as there are lots of different options to cater to all levels of walking experience. Here are 3 of our favourite walks to conquer this autumn:
1. Buttermere Circular Walk
4.5 miles/ 3 hours
This straightforward walk takes you through Sourmilk Gill Woods, past Wainwright’s ‘favourite fell’ Haystacks and through a historic 19th century man made tunnel. This popular route is the perfect introductory walk in the Lakes as not only can you enjoy spectacular views from every direction, you’ll have the chance to see the iconic image of the famous ‘lone tree’ on the lake’s northern shore.
10 miles / 4 hours 40 minutes
The 10 mile hike up Helvellyn was recently voted the nation’s favourite walking hotspot, and it certainly isn’t hard to see why. Starting in the picturesque village of Glenridding this rocky route takes you past the Hole-in-the-Wall and along Striding Edge, so this walk is certainly not for the faint hearted! However, this exhilarating walk is perfect for the more experienced explorers who are looking to take in some of the most dramatic views in the Lake District.
3. Scafell Pike
8 miles / 6 hours 30 minutes
Scafell Pike is the highest peak in England and boasts fabulous, panoramic views of the Lake District. The most popular route for scaling Scafell Pike is the ‘Corridor Route’ which takes you along stony bridleways and narrow rocky paths to the summit. If you are lucky, once at the top of Scafell your can see Wales, Ireland, Scotland and even the Isle of Man which means that this is a walk that every experienced walker should tick off their bucket list.
