Summer is officially over, the blustery autumn weather has arrived in the Lakes and we could not be happier. Autumn is a wonderful time in the Lake District, with so much to see and do in the area as well as simply sitting back and watching the countryside transform before our eyes. Here are just a few of our favourite things to do in the Lakes this autumn, book your stay now so that you don’t miss out!
1. Walk around Buttermere
Widely considered to be one, if not the, prettiest lakes in the Lake District, Buttermere is the perfect way to start your walking journey when staying with us. The Buttermere circular walking route is just 4 miles long and relatively flat, meaning it is ideal for beginners as well as those more advanced walkers who simply want to take in the stunning views. It isn’t difficult to see why the walk was ranked number 7 in nation’s top 100 walks and as it is only 20 miles from Whitbarrow Hotel why not book our Muddy Boots offer and we can pack you a picnic to enjoy on your walk?
2. Pick Blackberries at Whinlatter Forest
Whinlatter Forest is definitely one of the best Blackberry picking spots in the Lakes, and a must see if you fancy making your own jam (or Gin) before Christmas. Boasting unrivalled views across Bassenthwaite and offering 9 walking trails, 3 cycling trails and a wonderful onsite cafe there is no better place to spend a relaxed afternoon in the autumn air.
3. Do some Christmas shopping
Before we know it Christmas will be upon us, so why not make the most of our wide range of independent shops and pick up some unique gifts for your loved ones? Ambleside and Keswick will have you spoilt for choice and the Keswick market on Thursdays and Saturdays always provides a treasure trove of local gifts for you to take home.
4. Check out Castlerigg Circle
One of the oldest British circles, thought to be at least 5000 years old, Castlerigg Circle is a firm favourite with visitors to the Lake District. Historians and Archaeologists are unsure why the site was created or what it represents so why not take in the panoramic views and formulate your own theories?
5. Relax by the fire in our Eden Bar
After a long day exploring the Lakes in the refreshing autumn air there is no better place to relax than in our Eden Bar. With a roaring fire, sumptuous sofas and stunning views through he floor to ceiling windows you can tuck in to a hearty meal or snuggle up with a drink from our local distillery and bask in the beauty of the Lake District.
